Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Research Background 
In  recent  years  with  the  deepening  of  the  reform  and  opening  policy  and  the  fast development  of  the  Chinese  economy,  the  demands  for  English  in  the  Chinese  society  is becoming  much  more  larger  and  speaking  English  has  been  more  popular.  Schools  from different levels even kindergartens begin to pay more attention to English teaching.  As for English teaching, the vocabulary is regarded as the foundation of English. Thus the  vocabulary  teaching  is  the  key  to  English  teaching  success.  Harmer  (1990)  once  said that “in the language sketch, vocabulary is the subject which offers important organs flesh and blood. Wilkins (1972) states that little can be conveyed  without  grammar  but  nothing can  be  conveyed  without  vocabulary.  Nie  (2001)  holds  vocabulary  learning  is  something throughout  one’s  whole  life.  Thus,  if  one  wants  to  learn  English  well,  one  has  to  learn vocabulary well first.  As  for  the  Chinese  learners,  especially  the  Chinese  students,  the  English  vocabulary plays  a  key  role  in  learning.  The  main  problem  the  Chinese  students  are  facing  is  to  seek for  a  good  way  to  memorize  vocabularies.  According  to  the  requirements  of  the  national English  curriculum  standard  in  primary  school,  the  Chinese  primary  school  students  are required  to  master  600  to  700  English  words  and  about  50  idioms,  including  the  English vocabulary  of  weather,  numbers,  colors,  time,  toys,  food,  body  parts,  clothes,  animals, family  members,  personal  information,  plants,  entertainment,  festivals  and  friends. Moreover,  the  students  are  required  to  master  the  spelling,  pronunciation,  meaning  and usages of these words and idioms (Wang, 2003).

1.2 Research Questions
