Information technology is one of the most rapidly growing industry all over the world especially in India, IT professionals in India are known for their technical skills and innovative ideas and as such the Indian IT sector is recognised all over the world. It includes information technology enabled services (ITES), the functioning of software industry and business process outsourcing (BPO) industry. India is now known as the IT hub of the world and is one of the fastest emerging market in the software development field. The Indian IT industry’s origin can be traced back to 1974, when Burroughs, the main frame manufacturer asked Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) its Indian counterpart to act for a U.S based client by supplying programmers for system software installations. The Indian IT industry took its roots under difficult conditions. Lack of Local market and government’s aggressive policy toward private enterprises were among the bigger issues. The Bombay-based conglomerates put the foundation of the IT industry in India, which started the business by supplying programmers to overseas global IT firms.
Indian company was controlled by the state in the 1970’s, and the software market faced an aggressive market. Import tariffs were very high i.e. 135% on import of hardware and 100% on import of software and software industry was in its early stages of development so that exporters were not eligible for bank finance. the policy towards the IT sector became more positive when Rajiv Gandhi was elected prime minister in 1984. the new computer policy (NCP-1984) was introduced, consisted of lower tariffs on the import of IT software and hardware components i.e. Lowered to 60%, recognizing the software exports as a 'delicensed industry', i.e., eligible for bank finance and unchained from license-permit raj, permission to set up wholly-owned subsidiaries for foreign firms, export-dedicated firms and a project to set up a number of software parks that would offer a very low cost base infrastructure. It was these policies that became the base for the establishment of a reputable IT industry in India. The key factors for the growth of IT industry in India are:
Education Structure
The Indian education structure put strong emphasis on the quantitative aspects like mathematics and science, as a result a big pool of science and engineering graduates were developed and as the medium of learning was English, it resulted in a skill set that has benefited India from the high demand for IT.
Human Resource Quality
Indian IT engineers are well renowned for their analytical skills and technical capabilities and their positive and friendly approach towards clients. English being their educational language has provided them with competitive advantage over their non-English speaking rivals.
