Analysis of Difficulties in Real-time Conversations between Native Speakers and Non-native Speakers

Abstract
This dissertation aims to explore the difficulties in real-time conversations between Native English speakers and Non-Native English speakers (in this thesis research, the Non-Native English speaker was a Chinese speaker of English), specially focusing on the analysis from the sociolinguistic perspective and psycholinguistic perspective. It examines what features the speakers exhibit in the interactions, and especially how the two sides, the Native English speaker and the Chinese speaker of English, accommodate or fail to accommodate in the process of communication.
Based on the analysis of the materials obtained from the research, this thesis comes to some significant findings. Both the Native English speakers and the Chinese speaker of English have shown many features in the interactions. They generally adjusted their speech rates in view of the other interlocutor. They also tended to choose high-frequency words and share many words in the interactions. The Chinese speaker of English seemed to have exhibited many accommodating attempts in the aspect of topic initiation and development, while the Native English speakers treated each topic in a more detailed way. Besides, they all adjusted their nonverbal behaviors, such as gestures and smile to make it easier for the other interlocutor to understand. Finally, this thesis comes to the conclusion that in the communication between Native English speaker and Chinese speaker of English, they exhibit a series of interactive features. They indeed make accommodations in both verbal and non-verbal aspects. These accommodations shorten the communicative distance between speakers and create a friendly atmosphere for the interaction. However, these accommodating behaviors are not all their intentional ones, and disparity exists between their intentions and actual representation.
