INFLUENCE OF PIRACY ON THE CHARTER PARTY

1. Summary
Pirate is an old job as long as maritime shipping itself. During the 16th century, European countries began to exploit the other continents and seafaring was a large business, and then piracy appeared to be a real job. Between the 70 and 80 of the 20th century, piracy became a serious problem which actually affected the international trade by threatening the business shipping and the crew. This was the main reason that IMB (The international Maritime Bureau) started to report the situation of piracy in 1981. Today, pirates’ equipments are sophisticated, they often equip with GPS, satellite phones and arm with heavy damage weapon.

Nowadays, with the prevailing Somalia piracy, this kind of old fashion career is gained more and more focus by international social concern. In 2010 Lloyd list, pirate is becoming a fourth influential industry all over the world (2010b). Somalia pirates have their power on the sea towards the civilian vessels, off the coast of Somalia and in the Indian Ocean. They grasp the ship’s crew, take them as hostage, and demand the ship company for great number of ransom money.
