There is clearly a demand for degree qualifications. Indeed, enhancing recruitment
into nursing was one of the reasons why degree programmes were advocated. The
UKCC (1999) recommended expanding degree places on the grounds that these
could more easily be filled than diploma places and that there were insufficient
degree places for demand. Others, however, argued that such a move would lead to
decreasing numbers of applicants since perceived difficulties of degree-level study
