It is a requirement for students aiming to graduate with an MA from the University of Edinburgh. The dissertation is a very important part of the degree in Business Studies as it ranks for one-sixth (equivalent to 2 full courses at Honours) of the total Honours assessment taken over both the Honours years (6 courses in 3rd Year and 4 courses plus the dissertation in 4th Year). For the MA Honours in International Business or MA Honours in International Business with a Language the dissertation ranks as one-third of the total assessment.Undertaking the dissertation requires you to develop a deep level of analysis and understanding of the theory and processes of organisations and the business environment through the completion of a piece of individual research.
The objectives of the dissertation are:
• To make a study in depth of a topic which you are particularly interested in within the field of business studies.
• To gain experience of planning, designing, executing and reporting a significant piece
of individual research.
• To gain experience of the processes involved in research, such as obtaining information from people, securing their co-operation, analysing and evaluating data,framing recommendations, and other methods of field study and data collection.
• To learn how to communicate, via a report, complex ideas and information in a coherent and structured manner.It is the most complex component of the Business Studies degree programme as it integrates elements from prior parts of the course of study and requires students, counselled and tutoredmentored by their Dissertation Advisor, to identify and define a research topic, conduct the research and write it up in a report format as a dissertation, all within a predetermined schedule, which from start to finish lasts nearly 12 months.
