The Management Honours dissertation is taken in the Autumn and Spring Semesters (Semesters 1 and 2). From start to finish, the dissertation lasts just under 12 months.Contact Hours The preparation and writing of the Management Honours Dissertation involves meetings with Dissertation Advisors that involve a minimum of four meetings of variable length over the course of the dissertation period. Typically, these may take 4 hours overall. The research methods and dissertation preparation elements that underpin the dissertation process are taught over 4 hours of lectures.Non-contact Hours Students are expected to undertake the dissertation outside of contact hours. The dissertation is a major element of study (and is worth 40 credits). To complete successfully the dissertation requires considerable time to be devoted to researching the topic, gathering relevant data and writing up the research in the appropriate manner. Students should not underestimate the time required and the need to make an early start on reviewing the literature and collecting the data. In addition, if students intend to use modes of enquiry with which they are not entirely familiar, they will need to spend time to understand the qualitative or quantitative methods of analysis that they intend to use. Writing up in an appropriate manner is also a lengthy process.As the Management Honours Dissertation is equivalent to two taught courses, and is a complex piece of work, students should expect to devote a considerable amount of time to its completion. As per the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework (SCQF), this means that it should entail approximately 400 hours of student effort. In addition, students may need to devote considerable time over and above the recommended student effort time to data collection and manipulation as these are essential elements of the research that underpins the dissertation. It is, therefore, important for students to understand fully the need to “front-load”
their efforts as much as possible so as to allow plenty of time to complete the dissertation within the time allowed.Review of Drafts before Submission By week 8 of Semester 1, there is a requirement to submit a chapter of up to 5,000 words,which for most dissertations will be the Literature Review (or—in some cases—another element that has been agreed with your Advisor), for comment and feedback by your Dissertation Advisor. This is an opportunity to obtain helpful feedback on the content and presentation of the relevant section.
