摘要:As the research-announcing verbs play an important role in the research articles, the present study investigates the research-announcing verbs with high frequency inthe textile research article abstracts.
Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Research background
Over last twenty years, research article abstract, as the indicator of the essentialcontents and the structure of the whole paper, has aroused great interest in the circleof English for Academic Purpose, which has its special written patterns and functionscompared with other sections of the research articles. The research article abstract isan important component of the research article where writers must foreground boththe main claims of the paper and their importance, in order to attract the readers bydemonstrating that the research article is worth reading. Nevertheless, the abstractsare "heavily rhetorical" (Hyland, 2005: 125) rather than merely neutral descriptivesummary of the longer paper. Therefore, many studies are carried out on the rhetoricalfunctions in terms of macro-structure of the abstracts in the perspective of ESP genreanalysis (Greatz 1985; Swales, 1990; Salvager-Mayer 1990; Bhatia, 1993). Bhatia(1993) points out the abstract also follows the IMRD (Introduction, Methods, Results,Conclusion) model which was originally proposed to analyze research articleintroductions in English by Swales. Graetz (1985) identifies the structure of thearticles in different disciplines as Problem-Method-Result-Conclusion. However, themacro-structure of generic superstructures and rhetorical functional analysis are notenough for the writer to write a persuasive research article abstract. The linguisticfeatures at a micro level are very important to write a successful research articleabstract. Research-announcing verbs are one of the most important linguistic devices.

1.2 Aims of the research
As the research-announcing verbs play an important role in the research articles, the present study investigates the research-announcing verbs with high frequency inthe textile research article abstracts. It is expected that the research-announcing verbswith high frequency present wider variety of patterns and functions that are worthy tobe investigated. The investigation of frequently-used patterns of research-announcingverbs in the abstracts will provide important guidance both in learning and teachingthe research-announcing verbs in research articles. Therefore, this thesis aims toanswer the three main research questions as follows:
What are the most frequent research-announcing verbs in the textile researcharticle abstracts? And how to classify the research-announcing verbssemantically?
What are the typical patterns of the research-announcing verbs?
3. What are the discourse functions of the patterns of the research-announcingverbs?

Chapter 2 Literature Review
2.1 Previous studies on research-announcing verbs
The typical scenes of the academic process are investigating, coming to know, becoming known and making known (Meyer, 1997:117). These processes ofdiscovering new knowledge can be represented in different ways in research articles.Writers of research articles can choose between various linguistic devices to specifywhat precisely the study has achieved, and how the relevant information is acquired. One such strategy is to use research-announcing verbs with appropriate semanticproperties before the actual knowledge claim, such as fin本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
