Chapter One Introduction
It is common sense that the education in rural areas develops slower than the education in the cities because of the lack of fund to be invested on the equipment and human resources at schools. To be specific, the first noticeable problem with the education in rural areas was the lack of adequate teaching equipment such as computers and projectors. In fact, in some rural areas, there is no single computer in the whole school so that the teachers could not employ some efficient teaching methods such as using mass media to present the meaning and usage of English words. Hence, it would be difficult for teachers to improve their teaching efficiency. Secondly, the majority of the teachers working for the schools in rural area are not from famous teacher’s university because the students graduating from those famous universities would prefer working in the cities (Cai Tiequan, 2011). Due to the above two reasons, it was difficult for the teachers in rural area to improve the English teaching proficiency and the English proficiency of the students. Under such a background, it was necessary for those teachers to work out some useful teaching methods that do not require using advanced teaching equipment and the collaborative learning method would be the best choice for the teachers in rural area. The first task for those teachers is understanding the influence of the application of this teaching method, which is exactly the major concern of this research.
1.1 Research background
At present, due to the influence of the economic depression in the world, the employment problem becomes more and more serious in many countries. Therefore, the employers all over the world started to use higher requirements on the competence of the applicants. In fact, at modern time, employers require that the employees should be proficient in cooperating with others so that it could be guaranteed that all the members of the group could be unified to make more progress in promoting the development of the whole group (Chen Yumin, 2014). Actually, such a rule has already been agreed among the public and applied to various social activities, especially teaching activities. In fact, the most important part of the teaching activity is the communication between teachers and the students. The efficiency of communication between the teachers and students could determine whether the goals of organizing such activities could be reached and whether the students could grasp the teaching content. Therefore, there have been large numbers of people who used to make researches about how to organize cooperative activities in classes so as to make sure that the efficiency of teaching activities could be improved. Some researchers analyzed the strategies to organize cooperative activities such as the research made by Ding Guifeng (2007). Besides, there were also some other researchers who used to investigate the possibility of applying the cooperative learning activities for the classroom in universities, such as the research made by Li Jieli (2007)
