Chapter One Introduction 

Coincident  with  science  and  technology,  English  reading  for  senior  high  school students  has  been  highly  paid  attention  to.  In  order  to  be  an  efficient  reader,  It  is necessary to make use of reading strategies. A lot of research about reading have been done,  but  some  problems  still  cannot  be  solved.  Therefore,  this  thesis  tries  to introduce  the  concept  map  to  English  reading  teaching  and  explore  its  effects  on improving students’ reading strategies and reading proficiency. 

1.1 Background of the study 
As  we  all  know,  reading  plays  an  important  role  in  teaching  English.  Reading can  provide  students  with  numerous  materials,  improve  their  ability  to  analyze  and deal with problems, expand their scope of knowledge, widen their horizon as well as get them accustomed with culture of foreign countries so as to lay a solid foundation for their life-long learning. It is  well-known  that  teaching  reading is regarded as one of  the  most  important  factors  in  English  learning.  In  recent  years,  with  the  English reform,  a  great  change  occurs  in  English  reading.  But  there  are  still  problems  in teaching English reading which draw teachers’ attention. First  of  all,  It  is  necessary  that  traditional  reading  teaching  method  will  be improved.  For  the  time  being,  traditional  reading  teaching  method  encourages students to learn vocabulary, language points and make sense of grammar of English rather  than  on  the  analysis  of  the  structure  of  the  reading  passage  and  the improvement  of  students’  reading  skills.  It  is  not  beneficial  for  students  to  take  in knowledge  which  is  lacking  context  so  that  students  have  little  or  no  chances  to improve  their  ability  of  discourse  analysis.  It  makes  students  only  see  the  wood  not the whole forests.

1.2 Significance of the study
