Chapter One Introduction
There are three parts in this chapter: the background of the study, the purposeand significance of the study and the layout of the study.
1.1 Background of the study
This part includes existing problems of English writing for senior high schoolstudents and the requirements of English writing in English Curriculum Standards.In recent years, with the new era of the country’s structural changes about thedemand for the talent and the continuous improvement of the talent training policy,English education is steadily into the pace of reform and innovation. Although manyexperts, scholars and teachers make unremitting efforts, English education still hasnot achieved a qualitative leap. Even to date, English education has not beencompletely out of the old and decayed educational ideas. And under the influence ofexam-oriented education, many teachers still pay too much attention to grammar,sentence structures and exam skills but speaking and writing are usually neglected.Through the observation, the author finds that many senior high students lackcohesion and their cohesive mistakes frequently crop up in writings. For high Englishlevel students, writing seems very easy. They believe that copy fixed writing modelwill be able to achieve a certain score standard. For students with low English level,writing is too difficult. They don’t know how to practice it and they are completelyoverwhelmed in it. As a matter of fact, there are problems on these two attitudes. Forthe high English level students, they should follow certain rules while writing, but theauthentic writing competence should not be trained by the copy of a routine andimitating blindly will only reduce their competence in writing. For students with a lowEnglish level, giving up writing and trying their best to do other types of examinationitems will be a better way for them but they forget that writing itself is an essentialaspect of English language learning. It is unable to learn a foreign language truly butturn in the circle of the exam-oriented education if the ability to write not strong. Theyshould be guided and given a balanced development in listening, speaking, reading,writing and other aspects as far as possible. It is the wise approach of Englishteaching.

1.2 The purpose and significance of the study
Writing as an important part of English skills will not only follow with thestudents in the junior and senior high school stage of English learning but also followwith their English learning in the future. It has a crucial influence, whether studententer the university or study abroad. In English writing, all the writing score standardsof relevant examination are put forward their demands on the cohesion and coherence.For example, College English four, six levels of the Syllabus divided the standard into“weak continuity of coherence, manage to coherence, coherence, coherence better”. Inthe IELTS test, cohesion is still one of the score standards, such as “the text iscoherence, utilize cohesive devices with ease and properly”.However, for most English teachers, they are aware of English writing is theweak link of students, but help students to improve their writing skills is oftenpowerless.
