s Chinese senior studentsare concerned, reading is really one of the most important skills in English learning,which occupies a large proportion in entrance examination.However, the teaching effect of reading is not satisfying. One reason is that fewstudents know the correct reading skills. Another reason is that some teachers lookdown upon guiding the students what to read and how to read. Thus the readingcomprehensive ability of students is poor. It is common that teachers of senior highschool only see themselves as information and knowledge givers. Students'self-development is seldom taken into account. Teachers seldom teach students how tolearn. In preparation of lessons, little attention is paid to such question as "Whatdifficulties do they encounter in the process of reading?" "Can students monitor theirreading and thinking process?" In many cases, students just passively accept whatteachers tell them, instead of thinking actively or exploring new knowledge. Students'commonly-used method in learning English is rote-memorization. In fact as one ofprincipals once said, "In our school, from senior one to senior 3, from just graduatedyoung teachers to experienced old teachers, from high level classes to low level classes,the teaching method is the same without creativity" This phenomenon is common. Asan English teacher with many years of senior high school teaching experience, thewriter is also deeply impressed with a strange phenomenon that in the same class, withthe same teacher and the same study period, students have different performances inEnglish study. Some of them can speak English fluently, write good compositions andgain high marks. In the NMET (National Matriculation English Test) one of studentsgets 145 marks. However another student of the same class gets very low marks andshow little interest in English. Some students feel frustrated, thinking it is their lowintelligence that contributes to their poor performance, which in turn influences thestudy of other subjects. In fact we cannot say their intelligence is low, because they dowell in many other subjects, and some of the students even can get full marks inmathematics. The main problems that prevent them from being an efficiency reader areas follows: lack of background knowledge and necessary vocabulary, without properreading skills and strategies, and reading at a low speed. Foreign language readingteachers must teach students to make use of different kinds of reading skills accordingto different reading materials, build up their vocabulary and improve their reading rate.Thus the reading ability of students can be improved. Obviously, proper teachinginstruction should be considered.Another challenge English teacher faces in classroom teaching is the large numberof students. With the development of urbanization process, many people flood intocities and schools face an unprecedented challenge that is teaching English as a foreignlanguage in Chinese large class. The increasing numbers of students mean the widerange of students' English levels, which makes the instruction difficult to meet thedemands of every student. What's more, the teacher can hardly follow up on theperformance of every student, which makes it difficult to teach effectively. However, ifwe can think the problem in another way, we must admit a large number of students aregood learning resources. Under good guidance, they can learn from each other better.In recent years many
