And what pragmatic effects can thesetranslation methods achieve?

 

1.3 Research Methodology and Data Collection
The data in the thesis is selected from Shen Fu (1763-1825)’s Fu Sheng Liu Jiand its English version Six Chapters of a Floating Life translated by Lin Yutang. Theauthor classifies the culture-loaded words in the book into different groups accordingto the cultural factors they reflect and the translation methods are analyzed from theperspective of pragmatic equivalence which consists of pragmalinguistic equivalenceand sociolinguistic equivalence.

 

1.4 Structure of the Thesis
This thesis is made up of five chapters. Chapter 1 is the introduction. It explainsthe background and significance of the study. Meanwhile, it raises some researchquestions.Chapter 2 is the literature review. It reviews the previous studies on Lin Yutang'stranslated version of Fu Sheng Liu Ji. Also, it gives a brief review of this literary workand Lin Yutang.Chapter 3 is the theoretical framework. It gives the theoretical bases of this studyby explaining the necessity of pragmatic translation and the definition of pragmaticequivalence translation.Chapter 4 is the main body of the thesis. It gives some scholars' definitions andclassifications of culture-loaded words and further classifies the culture-loaded wordsin Fu Sheng Liu Ji into six categories for the convenience of study. The main part ofthe chapter is an analysis of the translation methods which Lin Yutang mainly adoptsin translating each category of culture-loaded words from the perspective ofpragmatic translation.Chapter 5 is the conclusion. It gives the major finding of the thesis, and furtherpoints out the limitations of the research. It hopes that this thesis will do some helpfulwork to incoming studies in future.
