　　For a long time the standard of poetry translation is uncertain. First, scholars are notagreed with each other in whether poetry can be translated or not. Second, it is reallyhard to promote a perfect standard to please all. Thus with their own understandingabout poetry translation, translation works are various in quality. A satisfied standard ofpoetry translation is in need to improve the quality of translation works.
　　
　　1.1 Purpose of the thesis论文的目的
　　In this paper，the writer aims at proving that among all those translation theories,Harmony Theory may be an appropriate one for poetry translation. As everyone knows,poetry translation is different from other genres of literary works，which may be themost difficult genre for translation. First, literary works are hard to translate. Second,poetry is the highest form of literature because it is the essence of human language inexpressing feelings and emotions. Third, standard for poetry translation is uncertain.Though there are some theories about poetry translation, such as Xu Yuanchong's"Triple Beauty，’ theory, Gu Zhengkun's “Five Aesthetics" and other literary theories,which can be adopted in poetry translation, some scholars still believe poetry cannot betranslated. Nevertheless，all these theories fail in fairly evaluating a poem translationbecause they, in a sense，do not analyze the works systematically and objectively thoughthey have attributed to the practice of poetry translation and actually made someprogress in it. Scholars are not satisfied with the situation at all about poetry translation.Therefore in this thesis, the writer introduces another translation theory: ZhengMailing's Harmony Theory in Translation. 　　The significance of Harmony Theory as a standard of Poetry Translation lies in thecase study of Pound's The River-Merchant 's Wife: A Letter. First it helps the study ofpoetry translation, the most difficult translation in the world which demands asystematic theory and evaluates poetry translation fairly. Cathay as its first appearancewas heatedly discussed for two reasons. One is approval for his great achievement intranslation; the other is severe criticism for his destruction of standard of faithfulness intranslation. With the further study of translation theories, translators have studiedCathay in many aspects such as Nida's equivalence translation, Hans Vermeer's skopostheory and others such as aesthetics of reception, translator's subjectivity, rewritingtheory, deconstructionism and intertextuality.
