Although Newmark's theory is mainly based on the F-E and G-E, previousresearch has concluded that it is somewhat a general theory，and it has instructive meaning aswell for C-E translation. For this reason, it is greatly significative to study the translation offigures of speech in Chinese literary works with Newmark's theory.For analyzing the translation of figures of speech in detail and explaining concretely thedifferences of figures of speech between Chinese and English，the chosen material is veryimportant for providing the views and theories good examples which help this thesis to becredible, persuasive, and understandable. It is required to choose well-known works that canstand the test of time，so naturally Lu Xun's works are great choice.Lu Xnn's works mark the beginning of modem Chinese literature and the transformationof Chinese society at that time，thus，they include almost all features of modem Chineseliterature, which makes them more proper in the research of Chinese literature or thetranslation of it. So the English version of Lu Xun's works (translated by Yang Hsien-yi andGladys) is chosen as the case in the thesis.What's more，Lu Xun's special personal charisma and writing style make his worksunique in expression method and fiill of different kinds of figures of speech. For the abovereasons, as representative works of modem Chinese, Lu Xun's works are applicable to beused as material to discuss the translation of Chinese figures of speech into English withNewmark's theory.
