　　1.1 Background and Purpose of the Study研究背景和目的
　　Translation has been viewed as just a process that only involves linguistics between sourceand target language before 1960s; however, with the improvement of science and cognition,culture factors had entered into the domain of translation studies. More and more translationresearches made their remarkable achievements on literary translation from the prospective ofculture, especially after the 'cultural turn' advocated by Bassnett and Lefevere (1990).Therefore translation today is an object which not only involves two languages but also twodifferent cultures, which means that both language and culture ought to be taken into carefulconsideration in the process of translating or translation studies, and more importantly, sincelanguage is the carrier of one certain culture, thus the essence of translation is to render theculture of that certain language; and due to this characteristic, translating is not just a simpleconversion between two languages across different cultures but also the interculturalcommunication behind languages. Translation is considered as the most difficult thing allover the world because language not just conveys the cultural information, but also isrestricted by the culture itself as well. Insome extent, communication, especially the interlingual communication could be regarded asthe intercultural translation. Thus translators should try their best to render and preserve thesecultural images and connotations from one language to another.On translation, especially literary translation, the rendering of culture-loaded words is themost difficult part for cultural varieties, because they carry not only the essence of languagebut also the embodiment of its rich cultural images and connotations. Whether beingtranslated faithfully and naturally or not, they have a great influence on the success of thetranslated text. It is thus the study on translating of literary culture-loaded words that is aworth issue. In order to translate faithfully these words, many translation researchers haveoffered their critical observations from different points of view. Guo Jianzhong (1999) putsforward that how to choose translation strategies in literary translation. Wang Dongfeng refersto the cultural default and translation compensation in literary translation (Guo Jianzhong,1999: 234). Bao Huinan. (2001) systematically comes up with the classification of Chineseculture-loaded words and innovatively proposes their respective translation methods. LiaoQiyi (2002) summarizes a general principle for translating Chinese culture-loaded words. Yetall their achievements are solely on the empirical level without any supporting from thetheoretic of translation.
