However, no scholar has ever systematically studiedidiom metaphor translation in E-C bilingual dictionaries. As a matter of fact, idiom metaphortranslation in E-C bilingual dictionaries is of great research value. As for the same idiommetaphor, different E-C bilingual dictionaries may adopt different translation methods. Such kind of translation differences deserves systematic studies. What’s more, aquestion arises as to what are the criteria to evaluate such kind of translation differences. Thesystematic study of idiom metaphor translation in E-C bilingual dictionaries has never beendone, and the criteria to evaluate idiom metaphor translation in E-C bilingual dictionariesremain almost an untouched subject.

1.2 Research objectives研究目标
Since the systematic study of idiom metaphor translation in E-C bilingual dictionarieshas never been done, and the criteria to evaluate idiom metaphor translation in E-C bilingualdictionaries have rarely been discussed, the present research intends to fill this gap. Inaddition, although relevance theory is not intended for translation studies, it has greatexplanatory power for translation. Hence, the thesis also intends to apply relevance theory toaccount for idiom metaphor translation in E-C bilingual dictionaries. Better understanding ofthe nature and the translation process of idiom metaphor translation in E-C bilingualdictionaries will enable compilers to increase the likelihood of success in dictionarycompilation.
