1. Introduction

1.1 Significance of the research
In everyday language, N+N sequences are frequently used to express new ideas,novel concepts and experiences (e.g. whiskey headache, corner girl). Such sequences canoffer a powerful and efficient means of communicating concepts for which there is nosimple or suitable one-word expression, just as Hatch and Brown (1995: 189) points out,“compounding is perhaps the most powerful word building process and the mostcommon compounds are two nouns combined to create a meaning which differ from thatof each”. Lyons (1977) stated that complex nominal is a frequently encounteredconstruction in natural language processing. Nida (1997) argues that N+N structuresappear to be continually increasing in number and complexity, especially in technicalwriting. A related study carried out by Baldwin & Tanaka (2004: 24) shows that N-Ncompounds occur in English with high frequency. They make a calculation that N+Ncompounds comprise respectively 3.9% and 2.6% of all tokens of the Reuters Corpus andthe written portion of the British National Corpus. A translator attempting to translate atext in English will certainly run across N+N sequences with high frequency. In technicaldomain especially, noun phrases carry much of the information. Therefore, it is of greatsignificance for us to take N+N sequence as the research object in this paper.

N+N sequence plays an important role in both language and cognition, in that itreflects the change of the language, demonstrates the compositionality of language in theraw, expands the function of language, increases language productivity, and serves topromote the development of language. There are many scholars who have mentioned andanalyzed N+N sequence from different aspects. Levi (1978) and Downing (1977) areconcerned with theoretical views on the comprehension and production of N+Ncompounds. In cognitive Psychology and psycholinguistics, Murphy (1988, 1990),G gné & Shoben (1997, 2000), Wisniewski (1996) and Costello & Keane (1997a, 1997b,2000, 2001) have made up a number of conceptual combination models, each of whichproposes different mechanisms and different interactions between the two elements of aN+N compound. However, the understanding of the construction mechanism of meaning is quite different from translating. Moreover, Wang (2008: 31) argues that these modelsand the strategy of construal do not fit Chinese language as well as they do in English.And in the area of translation studies, Cheng (1999: 61) emphasizes the importance ofprofessional knowledge in the translation of N+N sequence. Xu (1999: 13) investigatesthe translation of noun compounds in English and proposes four translating approaches,but he merely focuses on the register of EST. However, there are few scholars whoanalyze the translating methods of N+N sequence according to the logical relation of thetwo components.
