Smith: Saturday is ok for me. I’ll ask Mr. Johnson if he has any plans. But I think it would be all right. Suppose I’ll give you a ring this afternoon and let you know.
Friend: That would be fine.

(After listening to the tape, teacher could ask some questions about this conversation.)

1. What does the friend suggest?
2. Did Mr. Smith agree with the friend’s plan?
3. What is the plan of Mr. Smith and Mr. Johnson?
4. When will they go to the Great Wall?

(Repeat the tape again.)

6) Post-listening activity
Show some scenes through multi-media system. Ask students to make short conversation about making and declining an invitation. Tell students that they could do pair work for free.

2.5 Feedback

As one of the four basic skills in English teaching, listening not only means training students to understand others’ words, but also is a necessary learning means for students to master English. Therefore, teachers must give enough attention to listening to improve the quality of English teaching.

However, the improving of the listening level needs a large number of training exercises. As the native language of China is not English, there is not a good atmosphere for learning English in China. Thus, listening will become the first problem encountered by the students in the process of learning English. In fact, in the process of learning, many students ultimately lost interest in learning English because of a lot of obstacles caused by listening difficulties. If teachers can help students overcome this difficulty in the process of classroom learning in normal times, this will not only help them train other skills, but also lay a good foundation to develop communicative competence in English. Therefore, teachers should focus on combining classroom teaching and listening training together to achieve the goal of improving students' listening skills. In addition, there are some suggestions in the following:

1) Enrich students’ cultural background.
The extent of students’ understanding of the intention of the speaker not only depends on their language proficiency, but also depends on their understanding of the related social and cultural background knowledge.
