It includes brainstorming, group discussion, debate and questioning. Someforeign research scholars have mentioned the importance and feasibility of prewriting discussion.

Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Background of the Study
Writing is an important aspect of English learning, which is used to train and teststudents’ understanding of comprehensive knowledge and ability of using language.Writing is a major difficulty in learning English. Foreign empirical researches ofEnglish writing carried out for nearly half a century, while domestic researches in thisarea started much later.In nearly a decade, there were constant domestic researches on college students’English writing. However, researches on college art students’ English writing are veryfew. The art students, as the important and unique group of college students, have notbeen given enough attention. In the current system of college entrance examination,the cultural foundations of art students are relatively weak compared with the othermajors due to the lower standard of achievements. It can be seen from the personalitytraits of art students that they mostly have active and unique thinking ability, but onthe contrary, they have slightly weaker logical thinking ability, which is one of themost important abilities in the process of English writing. They have unrestrainedtemperament and are rich in imagination and creativity. Meanwhile, their teamconcepts are comparatively weak, showing the self-centered and undisciplined aspectof life. Therefore, they are more inclined to finish the writing tasks independently inthe whole writing process. In other words, it is a writing process lack ofcommunication. Furthermore, they can not invest a lot of time and effort to learnEnglish, owing to the tremendous pressure from their professional learning.

1.2 Objectives and Significance of the Study
Prewriting discussion is one of the most important techniques in prewritingphases. It includes brainstorming, group discussion, debate and questioning. Someforeign research scholars have mentioned the importance and feasibility of prewriting discussion, but few of them can specifically elaborate what measures should be takenand in what areas prewriting discussions influence art students’ writing. In China,studies of prewriting discussion primarily investigate its importance. There are only afew studies focusing on the empirical research of it. So this paper aims to study therole of prewriting discussion in English writing teaching of art colleges.The significance of this research can be analyzed from two aspects. On the onehand, this study aims to theoretically enrich the writing instruction for art students andcall on the scholars to focus their attention to improving the writing of art students.On the other hand, as it has been mentioned above, the art student lacks of logicalthinking ability and cooperative spirit, which is not conducive to students’ writing.This study is conducted to explore whether prewriting discussion could help artstudents to overcome these deficiencies, so that the art students no longer feel anxiousabout their English writing. It is hoped that this study may be able to shed some lighton the importance of prewriting discussion and its influence on art students’ Englishwriting.
