Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
In the last two decades, there is an increasing attention on the study of vocabulary in the second language learning and language teaching. Vocabulary is considered as the basis of communication. Many English learners think that the number of vocabulary they master can stand for their English level. However, lexical collocation is paid more attention than a single word among the researchers. One of the most outstanding utterance competences between native speakers and second language learners is collocation competence. Since Firth came up with the concept of “collocation” in 1957, the researchers discussed the related issues about lexical collocation from different angles in language teaching and learning. The second language learners always produce unnatural English both in communications and writings. Also, Ellis (1994) believes that collocation can represent the lexical level of the learners. Adjective-noun collocation ranks second only to verb-noun collocation. But the study of adjective-noun collocation errors is relatively rare. Collocation errors are unavoidable in the process of second language learning. Hence, the present
thesis studies adjective-noun collocation errors in English majors’ compositions through corpus-based approach. Under the guidance of error analysis, it combines quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis to study errors. This study explores the types of adjective-noun collocation errors and analyzes the causes why the learners commit these errors and suggestions on vocabulary learning and teaching are also proposed.

1.2 Significance of the Study
It is known that lexical collocation plays an important role in the process of second language learning. Nonetheless the acquisition of lexical collocation is difficult for second language learners. More native lexical collocations they require, more achievements they make in their communications and writings. Adjective-noun collocation is one significant type of lexical collocations. In China, single words and grammar are the emphasis of English teaching and learning.
