 dictionaries,  the  big  five  first come  to  mind.  Although  there  are  already  many  specialized  dictionaries  of  phrasal verbs  and  prepositions,  EFL  learners  still  prefer  to  turn  to  bilingual  learner’s dictionary for help. Therefore, this thesis will focus only on English Chinese learner’s dictionaries  which  include:  Oxford  Advanced  Learner’s  Dictionary  (OALD  8th), Longman  Dictionary  of  Contemporary  English  (LDOCE  5th),  Collins  COBUILD Advanced  Learner’s  English  Dictionary  (COBUILD  6th),  Macmillan  English Dictionary (MED 2nd).  The  above  dictionaries  are  well  received  among  the  learners,  and  also authoritative and up to date, intended for intermediate and advanced learners.

CONCLUSION 

This study collected and analyzed the top 300 most frequently used phrasal verbs with UP in COCA. With the help of prototype theory, image schema theory, and conceptual metaphor  theory,  the  300  phrasal  verbs  can  be  classified  into  four  image  schemas: dynamic  upright  image  schema,  path  image  schema,  container  image  schema  and contact image schema.  Each  image  schema  contains  several  metaphorical  extensions.  Dynamic  image schema  includes:  moving  toward  a  higher  position;  increase  in  quality  and  quantity; increase in physical state; increase in mental state; superiority; approaching or moving toward  a  destination.  Path  image  schema  includes:  finishing  and  dividing.  Container image  schema  includes:  confinement.  Contact  image  schema  includes:  aggregation and  connection.  There  is  a  sense  of  COMPLETION  in  the  last  three  image  schemas since they are correlated, which makes the phrasal verbs distinct from a simple verb.  An  analysis  of  Chinese  EFL  learners’  acquisition  of  the  V+UP  construction  is done  in  CLEC.  It  is  found  that  they  have  made  grammatical  and  semantic  errors  on this  construction.  The  grammatical  errors  are  mainly  concerned  with  the  inability  to distinguish transitive and intransitive phrasal verbs, the misuse of the preposition, and wrong placement of objects.
