CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION  

1.1 Research Background 
Phrasal verbs, also known as verb-particle constructions, are a common feature of the English  language.  Most  of  them  consist  of  Verb+Preposition,  Verb+Adverb  or Verb+Adverb+Preposition.  Usually  if  the  meaning  of  the  verb  is  known  and  if  the meaning of the particle is spatial, the phrasal verb is easy to understand. However, the most frequently encountered problem occurs, when particles are used metaphorically or when their spatial meanings are extended to abstract, non-visible domains such as thoughts,  intensions,  attitudes  and  relations,  etc,  the  phrasal  verbs  are  far  from obvious for second language learners of English, even if we know the basic or literal meanings of the verbs. Among all of the particles that appear in the Verb+Particle constructions (VPCs), UP is the most widely-used one. It can be combined with a lot of verbs and yield quite a  few  senses.  Thus  it  is  obvious  that  the  V+UP  construction  is  the  most  active  one. There are already many studies that have been done about it from the perspective of semantics, syntax and pragmatics, etc. However, the traditional semantic analysis not only  seems  somewhat  unsystematic,  but  also  has  not  elaborated  much  on  the complicated nature of the V+UP construction.  Former studies have analyzed the particle UP by using image schema theory and conceptual  metaphor  theory,  and  it  is  found  that  the  senses  of  the  particle  up  are mainly  derived  from  two  basic  image  schemas:  dynamic  image  schema,  and  static image schema (Lan Chun, 2003: 147-148). Many researchers have tried to classify the general image schemas of UP based on the two basic image schemas. However, their classifications are either too broad or not so accurate to some extent. There are still a lot of phrasal verbs are hard to be categorized into certain image schemas.

1.2 Research Questions and Objectives 
This  thesis  intends  to  unfold  the  mechanism  how  the  particle  UP  forms  and  extends different meanings when combined with a verb and thus forms a V+UP construction. Moreover, there are some problems in current mainstream ECLDs, so this thesis also tries to improve the actual presentation of the V+UP construction for ECLDs, which will eventually facilitate learners’ acquisition of the V+UP construction. The present thesis is fundamentally concerned with the semantic features of the V+UP construction and its presentation in ECLDs.
