betweenChinese Northeastern English learners and the native American speakers, this study isof great value both in practical and theoretical aspects.Firstly, since rhythm is important in English communication, it is important toinvestigate learners’ performance in English rhythm. Based on this comparative study,we can get to know learners’ weakness in English rhythm and therefore the aspectsthey need pay attention to. Besides, in this study the recordings of subjects have beenchosen from AESOP-CASS corpus of Chinese Northeastern area, rather thanrandomly chosen from Chinese mandarin speakers. The result of the study can showspecific information and provide suggestions to Chinese Northeastern Englishlearners accordingly.

Chapter Two literature review

With the ever-increasing need of communication and the improvement ofphonetic technologies, more importance has been attached to language acquisition in aworld-wide range. This chapter reviews the related terms of rhythm and rhythmstudies at home and abroad.

2.1 Rhythm

Speech rhythm is very important in communication. As Wong (1987) claims,it is rhythm, as well as intonation, that the native speakers of a language rely on toprocess speech. The incorrect use of speech rhythm, especially the misuse ofstress-timed rhythm for syllable-timed rhythm or vise versa may result inmisunderstandings of the speakers’ intention. Only when English learners masterEnglish rhythm, can they communicate effectively in English.Rhythm is discussed in many fields, such as in literature and psychology. Just asDe Groot (1968: 541) summarized, “it is frequently used for any kind of repetition orperiodicity in the physical world, also for any kind of correspondence in aestheticexperience, and generally, for practically anything connected with verse experience aslong as it is not clearly defined”. From the view of physics, rhythm refers to theacoustic contrast of pitch, intensity, length, and timbre together with their regularrepetition in the time axis (Low, 2000). From the perspective of psychology, rhythmrefers to the perceptual pattern composed of a series of recurrent stimulus alternatingwith regularity, such as rhyme, length, speed, strength, weight, level and oblique tonesas in Chinese, and so on (Woodrow, 1951; Fraisse, 1963 ).

2.2 Studies on Rhythm at Home and Abroad
Rhythm is a difficult phenomenon to acquire, and the appropriate acquisition oflanguage rhythm seems to remain a problem for teachers and learners worldwide.Researchers at home and abroad have done some work in language rhythm.Studies on English rhythm acquisition abroad started earlier than in China. Mostresearches were conducted with the assumption that all languages can be classified byspeech rhythm.Jane Setter (2005) made a comparative study between British English and HongKong English, aiming to find out whether there were any differences in rhythmbetween the two varieties. It turned out that the standard deviation of syllable lengthof Hong Kong English was comparatively smaller than British English, whether incontexts of stressed, unstressed or light reading. This explained why sometimes HongKong English is difficult to understand by native English speakers. When it comes to English rhythm acquisition in Japan, Japanese Englishlearners seemed to be influenced by their mother tongue.
