摘要:This research is expected to be of significance both at the theoretical andpedagogical levels. Firstly, the corpus-based research on English acknowledgementsin doctoral thesis by Chinese and American students can hopefully enrich the theoriesof genre analysis, especially ESP genre analysis of dissertation acknowledgements inthe specific field of linguistic study.

Chapter I Introduction

1.1 Research Background
As a genuine lingua franca, English has become ‘the world’s predominantlanguage of research and scholarship’ (Swales, 2004: 33). Thus, there has been a greatconcern with the English language skills of nonnative English speaking researchersand academics, especially those teaching and researching in a non-English languagecountry where the ability to conduct research and publish academic articles in Englishis highly demanded. The needs of this group of people are beginning to attract theattention, and there is a growing number of researches that studies the Englishlanguage behaviors and patterns of nonnative academics. One important source ofinformation on this issue is a series of papers by Flowerdew (1999a, 1999b, 2000)surveying and interviewing Cantonese L1 Hong Kong academics. The investigationsmade a contribution to the study of what it means to be a non-Anglophone researcherseeking international publication in a non-Anglophone country. A majority of hisrespondents admitted feeling disadvantaged when attempting to publish in Englishwhen they compared themselves with native English speakers. The past decade or so has also witnessed increasing attention paid to the notion of genre and its application in language teaching and learning. The interest in genrehas particularly assisted EAP teachers as it has helped to show how language is usedin various contexts and how this knowledge can be applied in the classroom. However, much of the work has tended to focus on expert writers and on the more explicitlyargumentative and persuasive genres. Described by Hyland (2003) as a ‘Cinderella’genre which is neither strictly academic nor entirely personal, Acknowledgementsseem to have been relatively neglected.

1.2 Significance of the Study
This research is expected to be of significance both at the theoretical andpedagogical levels. Firstly, the corpus-based research on English acknowledgementsin doctoral thesis by Chinese and American students can hopefully enrich the theoriesof genre analysis, especially ESP genre analysis of dissertation acknowledgements inthe specific field of linguistic study. The generic model of acknowledgementsproposed by Hyland (2004a) and its classifications of support and resources weregeneralized from both hard and soft disciplines. Therefore, it needs some refinementwhen it is applied to one specific discipline. The investigation of generic differencesin acknowledgements composed by students of different first language couldhopefully contribute to the existing research in generic structure of dissertationacknowledgements.Secondly, the research is expected to have pedagogical implications for ESL/EFL teaching. The acknowledgement section has received much less attention comparedwith other sections in theses and dissertation, namely Abstract, Introductions,Literature Review, Methods, Results, Discussion and Conclusion (Cheng 2012).Furthermore, graduate students who are writing in a second or foreign language tendto encounter greater difficulty than their native counterparts due to linguistic andcultural differences. Therefore, it is worthwhile to inform Chinese graduate studentsof the generic structure and linguistic features of acknowledgements composed bytheir native counterparts as well as the discrepancies so as to understand the optionsavailable to them and the effects of manipulating these options for interactiona论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
