ate.Wang Shaohua first introduced CIT into Chinese research in 2000 and published apaper in Journal of PLA University of Foreign Languages (2000:7-11). In thefollowing 10 years, this new theory of cognitive linguistics has drawn much attentionfrom scholars. As we can see in some core journals, simplex network can not fullyexplain the meaning formation, especially for the complex linguistic form which canbe best explained by CIT(Yu & Huang 2003:15). This theory, in the meantime, givesreaders a creative cognitive process (Gao 2010: 34).Furthermore, CIT throws somelight upon college English teaching, for it has great cognitive effects on linguisticform interpretation, for example, metaphor(Wang 2009:13).As the CMT is thetheoretical basis of CIT, their comparative studies are naturally carried out by scholarsfrom diversified perspectives in various research domains. (Huang 2002:12) Beingconsistent with western viewpoints, some assume that CIT shares many aspects ofCMT, and they are complementary to each other but not fundamentally oppositetheories in the aspect of interpreting languages. (Wang 2005; Luo 2006) All theseresearch results demonstrate and highlight the explanatory power of CIT in meaningformation and in revealing the cognitive mechanism behind language itself.The previous brief review of CIT has offered us a framework for illustratinglinguistic or cognitive phenomena. It, as a newly rising and developing cognitivelinguistic theory, has been showing its outstanding potential in illustrating meaningformation of language.When it comes to love metaphor, although more and more scholars tend to studymetaphor from the perspective of CMT rather than a rhetoric view, they areconsistently taking the metaphoric and original meaning as the source and targetdomain, which are correlated in a complicated way. The specific relation process hasnever been revealed and how the metaphoric meaning arises out of the literary wordsstill remains an unsolved question. Conceptual integration network, as a newlydeveloping network, has a great advantage in exhibiting the process of relatingdifferent domains and even in displaying the integration or blending of them. It is,therefore, constructive to study love metaphors by applying such a promising theory.Love metaphor, as a most important emotional metaphor, is no longer a means oflinguistic expression, for behind every single love metaphor the cognitive mechanismis concealed. How does the meaning of love metaphor form? What is the dynamicformation hidden in every love metaphor? In consideration of these questions, thisthesis applies the cognitive theory and makes a qualitative study of love metaphor,looking forward to exploring a fresh research perspective and to provide a new stageto the study of love metaphor.Following the principles of CIT, the present thesis attempts to answer the followingthree questions:1) What is the exact integration process of meaning formation of love metaphors?2) What is the mechanism of comprehending love metaphors in integration networks?3) How does CIT apply to teaching, translation or other areas?

The aim of CIT is to reveal the meaning formation and the blending of humanlanguages.
