　　Jane Austen is one of the most important novelists of the 19^^^ century,who enjoys great popularity all over the world. Her novels are admirable for itslively humor and delicate satire to give vivid portraits of the privileged class of the18th and 19century England. While Pride and Prejudice is doubtlessly her mostpopular novel among her six complete novels, many critics claim that her most matureone is MP, which is also her masterpiece.https://www.51lunwen.org/yywxlw/ Owing to its success, many researchers approach MP from various aspects:feminist criticism, gender criticism, new historicist criticism and cultural criticism,but these studies mainly focus on MP's theme instead of its fine language.Nowadays, great interest has been aroused towards applying pragmatic theories toconversations in literary works for the purpose of describing character relationships,character personality and motivation. Compared with the conversational approaches,the study of MP from the pragmatic approach is still in its infancy.This study aims to explore the conversational implicature in MP within thetheoretical framework of the Grice's CP and conversational maxims, Leech's PP andmaxims and Brown and Levinson's 15 off-record politeness strategies. The CP andthe related maxims explain how the conversational implicature is produced andinterpreted. Leech's PP accounts for the reason why people often violate theconversational maxims and employ indirectness in conveying what they really meanin the conversational interaction. The 15 off-record strategies illustrate differentlinguistic realizations of utterances which convey conversational implicatures and doFace-threatening Acts (FTAs) implicitly.

This dissertation elaborates the conversational implicature produced by the thirtythree examples selected from MP from the CP and PP, which is of great theoreticaland practical significance due to its exploratory and primary research in this field.Firstly, as to the classic fiction MP, almost all of the researches concerning itbelong to literary study, and only one of which is a research by means of cognitivelinguistics. Thus, the need for the pragmatic research on MP is obvious, bearing alot of expectations.Secondly, the analysis of the conversations in this novel may contribute to ourunderstanding of the conversational implicatures and politeness strategies.
