Chapter OneINTRODUCTION

In contemporary Chinese literature, feminist fiction as a unique and importantliterary school has arrested great attention in recent years. Bold experimentations withlanguage and peculiar feminist aesthetics as its cultural-representation have arousedheated discussions in Chinese and even foreign academia. To establish a trulygendered literature, feminist writers break up with the familiar frame of referencewhich is inescapably male-centered and attempts to create a feminist/female poeticsby its bold manipulation with language form. The innovation in the Chinese sourcetext invariably raises a question for its smooth expression and transmission in thetarget language. This paper hence attempts to examine the English translation ofChinese feminist fiction and pays special attention to those experimental linguisticfeatures, to find out the problems existent，strategies adopted and effects achieved inthe translation. The present chapter will usher in a brief introduction to the wholeresearch.

1.1 Need for the Study

Modem Chinese feminist literature is not only an integral part of contemporaryChinese literature, it is also of great significance to the development of feministliterature and studies around the world, with itself being initially enlightened bywestern feminism in the first place. With the growing trend of globalization today，thetranslation and introduction of modem Chinese literature can facilitate the spreadingand reception of Chinese literature. More than that, it can also contribute to theoverall literature exchange of the world. As a matter of fact, the contributionsachieved by Chinese feminist literature have already attracted attention from manycritics and scholars around the world and aroused their interest toward thedevelopment of feminism in Chinese literary arena.Against this background, the translation of modem Chinese feminist fictionbecomes a matter of great necessity, urgency as well as significance, since how ourfeminist literature is translated to a great extent determines how it is viewed andevaluated by foreign critics. Despite this, the number of modem Chinese feministliterature which has been translated is still relatively small，for reasons such asmarketing consideration, shortage of proficient literary translators, or the difficulty intranslating the original literary properties of both form and content, etc. In addition,when confronted with the bold language experimentation by feminist writers，asexhibted by the unconventional collocation and rhetoric, considerable psychologicalprobing, first-and third-person shifts，changing points of view and image projection,translators of modern Chinese feminist novels would, in spite of their great effort,find it hard to reproduce both the original aesthetic form and feminist content at thesame time. For this reason, the translation difficulties encountered，strategies adoptedand effects achieved are in urgent need of in-depth research. In the present study,therefore, it is necessary to conduct a close case study on the translation of onerepresentative Chinese feminist novel with regard to the above-mentioned factors.

1.2 Research Purpose
