Ⅰ. Growth: The Core of Initiation in The Chronicles of Narnia
Initiation story is about children’s growth and maturity. At the beginning, thecharacters in a initiation story are innocent or immature. They encounter a series ofevents and experience countless sufferings. During this process they are confusedand lost. They continually raise questions about the outside world and the societyaround them, struggling to find an answer and a way to achieve harmony with theworld or the society.At last, they have a new birth and become mature.Growth is the core of initiation in The Chronicles of Narnia. In the series, someheroes are changed and grow up along their quest journeys. In this respect, moralgrowth, emotional growth, and survival growth can be found everywhere. Thechildren become remarkably resourceful in their journeys, they are much like smalladults in this respect. They devise their own plans, pursue their own missions andfight their own battles, at last each of them gain maturity on their quests.
A. Moral Growth in theAdventure for Self-Consciousness
As a kind of social ideology, morality is the criterion and the norm of people’scommon life. It often represents the positive value orientation of society. In theancient Western culture, the word “morality” was originated from the Latin “Mores”.Since ancient times, morality has always been a mentor who leads people to pursueperfection. It teaches people to gain self-consciousness so as to understand theirresponsibilities to the family, to others, and to society. According to Freud, moralgrowth proceeds when the individual’s selfish desires are repressed and replaced bythe values of important socializing agents in one’s life, for example, parents, familiesand plights. In The Chronicles of Narnia, the protagonists’ experience moral growthin every aspect of their life. Some get mature understanding of good and evil, othersget maturity in maintenance of justice and peace.

In The Chronicles ofNarnia, many a protagonist undergo many obstacles and more threatening andperilous encounters, he or she may get emotional growth during the quests.According to the Bible, faith is the “substance of things hoped for, the evidenceof the things not seen” (Holy Bible 1117).
