Through thepower-body theory, this thesis discusses the body disciplinary mechanism conductedon NBA dancers and studies how the imperceptible micro power disciplines bodies insubtle ways. Power operates on body through the technique of discipline, whichembodies as the forms of control, training and examination. It finally shapes womeninto the aesthetic object according with the male discourse.First, bringing body activities under control within certain space and time is thefirst step and the premise to exert disciplinary power. Since bodies are confined tothe enclosed space, freedom is stripped of and the potential messes are avoided; nowthat the time use is prescribed, the body activity can be observed. Under these twoaspects of control, bodies at the first beginning become unconsciously obedient andsubordinated to the power side and it is easier to exercise other disciplinary practices.Second, controlling the body activity is to pave the way for formal and strict trainingof the body. In Foucault’s book, training is the main technique used to discipline thebody. Similarly, training is also a major technique used by the NBA league, whichaims to train the bodies so that they can become more functional and meet thecommercial needs. Third, examination naturally emerges in the wake of training. Thepower side checks whether the disciplined are well trained and meet the establishedstandards. Actually, in essence, body examination is to discipline NBA cheerleadersthrough the exclusion and elimination of those bodies that are not consistent with thestandard female image. By case study, this thesis concludes that by using a series of disciplinary techniques, the bodies of NBA cheerleaders are voluntarily disciplinedto become perfect commodities in consuming society.
