ler’s The Way of All Flesh, therace between Atlanta and Hippomenes in Ovid’s Atalanta, Constance Reid’s running inthe rain in D. H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover. In these works, running oftenrelates with demonstration of masculinity, romantic attraction and pursuit of freedomand humanity.Besides, John Bale makes a deep study about the running culture but he mainlyprobes into running from the angel of humanistic geography. He holds that running isoften taken as a kind of technology to compress time and space, while it can evokesome sensory effect different from walking. Bale points out that “running is not mereperambulation or ‘rushed locomotion’; it can invoke the notion of speed—of ‘runningwild’, of escape, of indiscipline” (1).In this sense, running implies escape and resistance. Moreover, running can “be associated with ‘the good life’” (i). He also demonstratesthat running is often related with religious experience. Running with spirituality caninvoke the notions of “muscular Christianity” or “muscular Judaism” (149).1Runningenables humans to get near to god and gain strength and ability to influence the worldaround us. Furthermore, he also points out that running away and running wild are bothimplying some kind of escape and resistance against confinement or control.

Chapter ThreeATemporary Escape from the Outer World

A.An Escape from Machinery System and Consumerism
Humans often create things for convenience, but in turn humans are also controlledby these things. Take weapons and machines for an instance, they fully represent thedevelopment of human “civilization” and technology. Humans attempt to control thesethings to make more benefits and convenience, while they did not anticipate that thesethings can also bring damages and confinement for them. For the Native Americans, there were also some fights between tribes, while their weapons were often stones, knives, sticks, arrows and other handmade weapons. But the westerners brought withthem some guns which were more deadly, and later humans invented much more deadlyweapons in the two world wars. Large amounts of rifles, bombs, tanks and battle-planeswere used to gain victory. The wars not only robbed millions of people’s lives, destroyed their homes, but also caused spiritual traumas. The world was no longer intact, just like humans’ mind has become fragmented. Abel participated in the Second WorldWar, and witnessed how life was destroyed by weapons. When he awoke one afternoonon the side of a wooded hill, he saw men’s bodies spread among the pits, their limbsscattered under the falling leaves, silent and lifeless. Then he saw a black and huge tankpass by, he shook violently. A kind of panic seized his heart. Compared with hugemachines and deadly weapons, humans’ life was fragile just like the leaves falling fromthe branches. Abel was shocked by the scene so论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
