Chapter I Introduction  

This  chapter  is  an  introduction  to  the  whole  thesis  and  it  includes  three  sections.  In  the part  of  the  research  background,  the  present  situation  of  nursing  English  learning  in  higher vocational  schools  will  be  talked  about.  Next  the  roles  that  formative  Assessment  plays  in assessing students’ nursing English study will be pointed out and the significance of this study will be described. In the end, the structure of this thesis will be set out in detail. 

1.1 Background of the Research
Nursing  is  a  specialty  emphasized  in  the  service  to  human  health.  People  who  are engaged  in  Nursing  profession  can  provide  service  to  the  others’  health.  Thus  they  make certain  contributions  to  society  and  they  are  accredited  by  the  public.  With  the  updated concept  of  people  on  health  and  the  development  of  global  economic,  the  social  need  for nurses  is  also  on  the  rise.  Our  society  requires  the  nursing  education  to  cultivate  a  large number of highly educated nurses that can meet the needs of health service system reform. As it  is  proposed  by  the  Chinese  Nursing  Career  Development  Plan  Outline  (2011-2015),  the total  number  of  the  national  registered  nurses  should  be  2.86  million.  The  number  of registered  nurses  is  2.07  per  thousand  population.  The  percentage  of  nurses  with  college education  or  above  should  not  be  less  than  60%  in  the  nurse  team.  However,  only  in  the recent  years,  the  higher  vocational  nursing  students  group  has  appeared  in  large-scale.  At present, the senior nursing talents have been listed as one of the four great scarce talents by the state.       With  the  vigorous  development  of  vocational  education  enterprise  in  our  country, nursing talents with higher English level has become the international nursing skilled talents that  are  in  shortage  in  this  area.  Cultivation  of  the  senior  nursing  talents  has  turned  into  the priority  development  strategy  in  China.  The  rapid  development  and  progress  of  scientific techniques  require  higher  quality  of  talents.  Nursing  talents  should  possess  on-the-job vocational capability to fit for their own work.
