ion and strategystudies, only 13.9% of the researches are empirical studies, and there is a few researchesavailable on comparative study between separate item MC cloze and banked cloze;moreover, researchers do not reach a consensus over the questions such as whether differenttypes of cloze tests adapted from the same passage have the same validity or whetherdifferent cloze formats will influence the test-takers' performance. Therefore, an empiricalstudy on validity of the two cloze formats in CET4 has its necessity and is of practicalsignificance.

1.2 Research Questions研究问题
This study set its goal to compare the validity of two types of cloze test in CET4:separate item MC cloze and banked cloze. The two cloze formats will be compared in theaspect of their face validity, content validity and construct validity. It aims to draw aconclusion whether the two types of cloze tests adapted from the same passage with thesame blanks have the same validity. It's expected to extend test designers and languagelearners and teachers' understanding of the two types of cloze, and improve the quality andI effectiveness of cloze tests in China.In order to achieve the aims mentioned above, two questions are put forward in thisstudy:Ql; Are there any variations in validities of separate item MC cloze and banked clozewhich are adapted from the same passage with the same deletion places?Q2: Are there any significant differences existed in test-takers' performances whendifferent cloze formats are utilized?

1.3 Significance of the Study研究意义
Several empirical studies relevant to different cloze formats have been done at home.He Lianzhen (1999: 97-102) made an comparative study of separate item MC cloze andbanked cloze, the study found that separate item MC cloze was correlated more withvocabulary and grammar, while banked cloze was correlated more with comprehension ofcontext. Wei Xiaohong (2004) compared the validity of three types of cloze test (separateitem MC cloze, banked cloze and open cloze). The results showed that open cloze had thehighest validity among these three test forms. However, most of these previous studiesmainly focus on quantitative analysis, there has not been any comprehensive researcheswhich adopt both quantitative and qualitative methods; and most of these researches justfocus on test scores with little information available on test-takers' actual testing process.Therefore, the present study will be significant in the following aspects;Firstly，based on the empirical data，this study intends to provide some supportingevidences for relevant researches on cloze test. Face validity, content validity and constructvalidity of the two cloze types are compared in this study, and the findings will be helpful toanswer some research questions, such as whether there are some variations on validity ofseparate item MC cloze and banked cloze adapted from the same passage，whether differentcloze formats will influence the test-takers' performance, and which type of cloze test ismore effective in assessing test-taker's general English proficiency.Secondly, this study is expected to give both the test designers and language teacherssome suggestions. The findings of this study may deepen the test designers' understandingabout the validity of these two types of cloze test, and help them make a decision whichtype of cloze format is more suitable for their purpose.
