Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Research Background
Globalization is a common goal and progressing tendency of human beings in 21stcentury. With the further development of economic globalization, communication betweennations is becoming more and more frequent. Cooperation involves a variety of realms, suchas politics, economy, culture and so on. English is the most widely used language in the world.Bilingual translation is unescapable no matter what kind of purpose we use English for. Weuse English to gain information as a tool, or to propagate culture and exchange with others.Under the background of economic globalization, large numbers of translators who are skilledat English are in urgent need in China to promote international collaboration and improveinternational status. Thus great importance should be attached to the education of Englishmajors. Translation is the transition between languages as well as minds. The influence ofdifferent thinking modes between Chinese and English ought to be seriously taken.Translation is not only a conversion between two languages but also a transformationbetween two thinking modes. As an international language, English is regarded as a tool toobtain information and knowledge, or used to communicate and spread language and culture.No matter which purposes we use English for, we do need bilingual translation. Starting fromthe view of the relationship between language and thinking under the cognition-knowledgebilingual double structures theory, this research focuses on the study of translation inscribesof TEM-8 to discuss the influence of different thinking modes between Chinese and Englishon translation information processing, further illustrates the essence of translation rules, andoffers practical translation skills and strategies for translators between English and Chinese,especially for candidates for TEM-8.

1.2 Research Purpose and Significance
“Translation is a special kind of thinking activity, which is reflected in realistictranslation thinking with a certain structure pattern and activity form. It restricts and affectsthe quality of translation activity”(Liu, 2007:30). This study has a certain theoretical andpractical significance. In theory, it discusses the influence of different thinking modesbetween Chinese and westerners on translation information processing. In practice, it providesmethodological guidance for translation teachers and offers translation strategies forexaminees of TEM-8 to help them improve practical translation skills.

2.1 The Relationship between Language, Thinking and Translation
As a kind of cross-culture communication activity, translation is not just a conversionbetween two languages, but also a transition between two different thinking modes. Thinkingis a reflection of objective things in human mind. It reflects and affects the objective world.The relationship between thinking and language is inextricably linked. Translation starts fromlanguage and finally ends up with language. So language, thinking and translation share amutual connection and influence. Humboldt (1836/1988) argues that “language is the tool of thinking, language andthought are in one, they are indivisible” (qtd. in Gui, 2000:557).
