摘要:China as a country is paying much attention to English teaching. At first, the range of itsEnglish teaching was narrow, focusing only on teaching vocabulary, grammar and translation.With a more thorough study of English teaching,improvement of students' listening, speaking,reading and writing abilities and cultivation of their cultural appreciation, were graduallyemphasized.

Chapter One Literature Review


In this part of thesis,the research status of English teaching in foreign countries and in China is briefly introduced, which were analyzed later to achieve the result that adult English Education of self-study examination is being paid more and more attention, proving that this study is feasible to be made.

1.1 English Teaching in Foreign Countries
Wang Cairen thought that the 20th century was one in which English teaching in foreign countries grew vigorously and the research of teaching methods achieved great success. On one hand, some nineteenth century teaching methods were passed on and continuously refined, approaching perfection. On the other hand, innovative teaching methods grew unceasingly up and thrived, forming a sight in which kinds of methods coexisted and vied with each other for glamour (Richards, J.C. & Rogers, 2000). Language teachers engaging in second language teaching nearly focused all their energy on searching for teaching methods. These methods, in the writer's opinion, can be divided into two schools: one is based on the Behaviorism, suchas Direct Method, the Audiolingual Method and Total Physical Response, and the other isbased on the Cognitivism, for example, the Natural Approach, Communicative LanguageTeaching, Community Language Learning and the Silent Way. Among these teaching methods, the Communicative Language Learning was largely extended in the middle of which had good effect on the development of Cooperative Language Learning, Content-based Instructionand Task-based Language Teaching. From then on, more and more educators and linguistshave agreed on the idea that there are no settled or standard methods in language teaching. Therefore, English teaching in foreign countries entered into the Post-methods Era.

1.1国外英语教学

1.2 Adult English Teaching in Foreign Countries
