CHAPTER ONE  INTRODUCTION  

1.1 Research Background 
China's economic strength  has been  growing very fast in the past few  years: in 2011, after  more  than  30  years  unremitting  efforts,  China  surpassed  Japan  to  become  the world's  second  largest  economy.  And  three  years  later,  with  annual  foreign  direct investment (FDI) totaled $127.6 billion, China defeated the United States and became the  world's  largest  FDI  recipient  country.  All  these  settings  contribute  to  the  strong domestic  demand  for  international  business  talents,  and  eventually  affect  talents cultivation  in  Chinese  higher  Education.  For  one  thing,  English  as  a  business  lingua franca  has  been  taken  very  seriously  in  colleges  and  universities;  for  another, universities have  set  up  Business  English  (BE)  as  an  undergraduate program  so  as  to cultivate  high-level  talents  who  can  smoothly  be  engaged  in  international  business activities.  According  to  statistics,  ever  since  the  BE  undergraduate  program  in University of International Business and Economics was approved by the Ministry of Education  in  2006,  216  colleges  and  universities  has  launched  BE  undergraduate program  by  September  2014.  It  seems  that  talent  cultivation  in  higher  education  can perfectly meet the demand of our society. However, unfortunately a large number of BE graduates  are  unqualified  due  to  the  antiquated  curriculum  structure  and  teaching methods,  unsuitable  teaching  materials,  shortage  of  teaching  staff,  as  well  as inappropriate assessment.

1.2 Rationale 
The aforementioned unqualified talents training is ascribed to the unsuitable curriculum, teaching  materials,  assessment  etc.,  which  all  partially  originate  from  the misunderstanding of Business English. In this case, finding out the essence of Business English is a top priority. Then what is Business English?
