2.1 Overview of Vague Language
Vague language is the core of the research, so the literature review will startfrom it. The review of vague language mainly comes from two ways: the definition ofvague language and the classification of vague language. When these steps werefinished, a summary of vague language is introduced to make the reader more clearabout the contents.Peirce (1902) was treated as the pioneer who brought in the vagueness conceptand attempted to make his own understanding of vague language. He is the first onewho tries to define vagueness and he is the initiator in making definition of vaguelanguage. He viewed that vague language is decided by the speaker's words not thereader's or listener's understanding (89). Vagueness phenomenon is an inherentambiguity of the language itself. This kind of ambiguous or uncertainty was intrinsicand innate.Russel , who is a British philosopher, mentioned in his paper that all language issomewhat vague which increases the difficulty for defining vague and non-vaguelanguage (83-6). The board line between the two is inherently not that clear, everylanguage has the vague property, and vagueness is a complicated entity with so manyelements involved. Vagueness phenomenon has so many relations.Wallenstein philosophers insist that the vagueness of language reveals the defectsof language itself, so they managed to find out a systematic way to create certainprecise or accurate language to substitute vague language (71). Conversely, somephilosophers holding the opposite view tend to see vague language as necessary andinevitable (Zhouyi, 30). Appropriate use of vague language can build up efficientcommunication, so it is unnecessary to purposely avoid using it. The philosophicalstudy of vague language solved the doubt that why natural language bearing theproperty of vagueness and how vagueness should be handled.

2.2 Overview of Persuasive Business English Letters
Business English correspondence can be classified into four categories accordingto the information it contained: good news business correspondence; general businesscorrespondence; persuasive business correspondence; bad news business letters.(Stewart et al, 1984) This kind of classification is made by Stewart. He holds thatgoods news business letters and general business letters are usually expressed in amore direct way while bad news and persuasive business letters tend to be written inan indirect manner. After a rough investigation of NES’s and ECL’s businesscorrespondence, I discovered that the difference between the two seems to be evidentin persuasive business letters. So in this thesis, the research area is mainly forpersuasive business correspondence.Business English Correspondence refers to the letters used in the process ofbusiness communication. It is a channel for establishing business relationshipsbetween business partners and the function of it is delivering information, handlingbusiness affairs and contacting with each other.
