CHAPTER FIVE CONTRASTIVE STUDY AND DATA ANALYSIS

In this chapter, the use of vague language in NES’ and CEL’s persuasive businessletters will be analyzed in details and then a contrastive study will be ensued to findout these following research points: What's the similarities and differences betweenNES' and CEL' persuasive business letters in the application of vague language? Howthe Adaptation Theory is used in the analysis of these differences?

5.1 Application of VL in NES’s and CEL’s Persuasive Business Letters

In order to make the research results convincing while considering the limitedpages of the thesis, only part of the samples will be presented in details. However, allthe business letters collected is attached to the Appendix.The following two sales letters are extracted from the samples collected:Example1 from NES’s Corpus:The Stenogram is efficient, reliable, time saving and economical. From this example, it is easyto see that there are indeed many vague languages are employed which proves theimportance of this research. Vague words especially vague adjectives like efficient,reliable etc. shows the special features of the product. International reputationexpressed the fame of the product in a vague way. Here, it is not actually to showinternational meaning but to give the reader a feeling that the product bearing aworldwide and good fame. Vague expressions like “thousands of, all over the world”describe the scope of the business in a vague way.
