1.1 Project Background

At the beginning of this project, it’s necessary to analyze the project background andthe features of the source text. Besides, the author also generally describes the wholeprocess of the project and introduces the guiding theory for translating the yearbook.

Jiangsu Province Yearbook is a comprehensive annual data publication supervised bythe General Office of the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province and organized by theOffice of the Local Annals Editorial Committee, Jiangsu Province. Nowadays, Jiangsuprovince pays more and more attention to the promotion of its culture. Therefore, theOffice of the Local Annals Editorial Committee compiles and publishes the English editionof Jiangsu Province Yearbook year by year to introduce Jiangsu to overseas. The yearbooknot only promotes the overseas publicity of Jiangsu, but also offers essential data for somestudies. Jiangsu Province Yearbook 2018 covers the information about Jiangsu’s recentdevelopment in natural environment, politics, economy, culture, society, ecologicalconstruction in 2017. The project started from May 17, 2019 to June 1, 2019. 17 chaptersextracted from Jiangsu Province Yearbook 2018 with a total of 135,643 words weretranslated by 12 students, majoring in MTI in Nanjing Normal University.

1.2 Features of the Source Text

Yao Shigang (1998: 54) believes that the yearbook is usually a combination ofcomprehensive, accurate and large-capacity knowledge, information, literature, and data onan annual basis. The author considers that the grasp of the features of the source text is thekey to improving the quality of the yearbook. The style of the yearbook has evolved inlong-term development, which is determined by the nature and function of the yearbook.Compared with other texts, there are essential differences. The style of the yearbook can bedescribed as a combination of explanatory and narrative texts, and expository is the mainstyle. It is straightforward and concise without comment.

In general, the analysis of the yearbook can be carried out from two levels ofvocabulary and syntax. Firstly, the yearbook tries to contain as much information aspossible and avoid being lengthy, so the vocabulary must be concise and professional.Therefore, it is not uncommon to see a large number of terminologies. Besides, since theyearbook is revised and published year by year, data also updates every year, whichreflects the development directly and objectively. In light of the cultural context of thesource text, expressions with Chinese characteristics are also of great significance, becausethese expressions are full of Chinese cultural connotation. So the three kinds ofvocabularies embody the authenticity and the accuracy of the information. As for thesyntactic structure, plenty of non-subject sentences render the yearbook more terse, andcomplex sentences more compact. We can conclude that the conciseness of language andthe integrity of structure reflect the characteristics of the yearbook.
