6.1 Incorporation of interpersonal relationship into public comments
Yang (1994) categorizes three interpersonal relations in China: family members, familiar people such as relatives, neighbors or persons in the same village, friends, colleagues or classmates, and mere acquaintances or strangers. Different sets of interpersonal rules with different social meanings govern the three distinct categories of relationship. Chinese society attaches great importance to the distinction between in-group memberships and out-group members, with in-group members favored by preferential treatment. The family relationship is featured with relatively permanent, stable relationship. The family members belong to the in-group membership. The stranger category incorporates those who are outside the family and with no established meaningful relationship before. Driven by utilitarian mindset, interactions with strangers are superficial and temporary.
As Chinese society enters into an industrialized and pluralistic one from a traditional one, interpersonal relationship in the stranger category plays a pivotal role. In the current study, the interpersonal relationship between D&G-an intercultural company and Chinese public falls into the category of strangers. The unacceptance of the denial strategy by Chinese public can come down to the question of “trust”. “Trust” should not be talked about in family relations. Nevertheless, with the change of social structure brought by social mobility or individual mobility, people have to interact and work with strangers who do not know each other well. This will increase the time and interaction costs of establishing trust between strangers, thus increasing the difficulty of trust building.
