In order to identify conceptual metaphors in GBA news and the dimensions to construct GBA image, it is of great necessity to grasp the main ideas of discourse from the key semantic domains annotated in corpus tool Wmatrix 4.0 and to establish a general understanding of the discourse by a pilot study. This section applies the corpus tool to investigate the central ideas of the collected GBA news reports, major target domains of conceptual metaphors from key semantic domains. Besides, it also involves the conceptual metaphor identification and its relative distribution.

5.1.1 Key Semantic Domains in GBANC

Before the detailed analysis of conceptual metaphors in GBA news, a general description of the data in GBANC is firstly presented to identify the major topics of the collected news, potential dimensions to construct GBA image and proposed target domains of conceptual metaphors with the aid of USAS tagger in Wmatrix 4.0. Referencing to BNC written corpus, a list of key semantic domains are generated, from which the present study selects the top 10 key semantic domains to further investigate the semantic significance of GBANC.

As shown in Table 5-1, these semantic domains are ranked by their respective significance, namely log-likelihood (LL) value. The higher the LL is, the more significant the semantic domain is (Rayson, 2008). Observed from the top 10 key semantic domains and their examples, they can be subdivided into two general categories. The first category is constituted by the top 4 semantic domains M7[Places], W3[Geographical terms], A5.1++[Evaluation: Good] and Z2[Geographical names], which refers to the central objectives of GBA, for instance, area, region, cities, bay, Hong Kong, Macao, Shen Zhen, etc. The other category consists of the latter 6 semantic domains Y1[Science and technology], I2.1[Business: Generally], A2.1+[Change], S8+[Helping], T3-[Time: New and Young], I4[Industry], which tends to highlight the topic of GBA news reported by China Daily.

CHAPTER SIX CONCLUSION

6.1 Major Findings

Based on CMT (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980) and CMA (Charteris-Black, 2004), this study has investigated metaphors used in GBA news reports and GBA images constructed by China Daily through the employment of metaphors. According to the research questions raised in chapter 4 and the in-depth analysis in chapter 5, the major findings of this study are summarized from three aspects:

First of all, referring to Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners and MIPVU (Steen et al., 2010), 241 types of metaphor keywords are identified in China Daily’s GBA news reports. They are further grouped into 7 categories of conceptual metaphors, namely competition metaphor, journey metaphor, building metaphor, machine metaphor, organism metaphor, measurement metaphor.
