摘要:Ageing population is a shift in the national demographic distribution towards the elderly population.
1. Background—increasing aging problem
It is usually reflected in the increase of the median ages of the country´s population, which is caused by the decline in the proportion of the population composed of children, and a rise in the proportion of the population that is elderly(Wikipedia-aging population). In previous decades, advances in medical technology have made it possible for people to live longer than in previous generations. Due to the trend of increasing longevity and declining fertility , the average life expectancy in the world has increased in varying degrees since the latter half of the last century. In many countries, the average life expectancy was only 40 years in the 19th century and has since the end of the 20th century reached 60 to 70 year-s; the average life expectancy has even extended to over 80 years in some countries. In 2002 the world average life expectancy was 66.7 years and the number in Japan is nearly 82 years (Wikipedia, 2008) which has allowed Japan to maintain its position on the top of the world's longevity ranks.
