Although the number of alliance formation has increased in the last years, there are still many problems in exchange relationships between partners. Many scholars claim that more than 50% of the strategic alliances do not succeed. To overcome this issue, managers in strategic alliances should better understand the factors on which the interorganizational relationship depends. [1]
There are negative and positive sides of the strategic alliances. On the one hand, is considered that strategic alliances make it easier for a firm to succeed and to achieve its goals or to manage some of its environmental constraints. On the other hand, firms lose their autonomy or independence when forming alliances, which is the issue of the current study. [2] It refers to the incentives and consequences of dependence between partners in a strategic alliance. Transaction cost and social exchange theories contribute to reveal the incentives of dependence and an example for consequences of dependence is the opportunistic behavior, the lack of trust, power, etc. Furthermore, many studies explore the management strategies of firms seeking to cope with their partner dependencies. [3] The final object of the current study is to discuss different strategies to prevent or to terminate the negative influence from dependence of one firm on another.
2 Conceptual framework
Considering the role of dependence in governing strategic alliances in the current study, there are three steps to describe the dependence concept. First, it must be given a definition of dependence, where it emanates from, how it influences the mutual relations between partners or which consequences it causes and how partners can safeguard from dependence. Second, the term 'dependence advantage' is going to be defined. Finally, we consider who depends on whom or which factors influence the dependence of one actor on another.
2.1 Dependence in strategic alliances
Das and Teng (2000) argue that: 'forging an alliance usually increases a firm’s dependence on its partner firm'. Hence, the mutual dependence between partners is a very common characteristic of the strategic alliance.
