Abstract

This research proposal develops a conceptual framework for analyzing the relationship between Foreign Direct Investment inflows into a country and the institutional context of that country. The study is particularly focused on Central and Eastern European economies in transition. Transition has shaped a specific pattern of institutional development in this region. This pattern has a complicated influence on the way CEE countries are regarded by investors. Both formal and informal institutions affect the risk perceptions of Transnational Corporations and thus direct investment flows.

1: Introduction

The years 1989-1991 marked an important turning point in Central-East European history. The events that followed, have attempted to radically change many aspects of social, political and economic lives of countries in this region. These changes have embodied the process of transition from socialism to capitalism, from totalitarian rule to liberal democracy, from centrally planned to market economy.

“Communism went down in Eastern Europe because of the widespread understanding that as a system it lost the technological and thus economic war against the West. Some saw this system change as a last chance to catch up with the most advanced countries.” [1] In the attempt to catch up with the West, the leaders of the newly emerged democracies have implemented capitalist economic and political systems which copied the Western ones.
