本文对以往英汉语反身代词的研究进行了一次简要的梳理，但我们发现，无论是纯句法理论还是纯非句法理论都未能对英汉语反身代词做出很好的解释。反身代词的约束问题要受到句法、语义或语用等多方面的因素的影响。
Chapter 1 Introduction
1 .1 Preliminaries
      Reflexives have always been attracting great attention.Especially after the appearance of Chomsky’s(1981)Binding Theory, they have gradually become one of the foci of scholars’attention and aroused great debates. Principle A of the Binding Theory proposed by Chomsky(1981)states that an anaphor must be bound in its governing category,   the domain that includes an anaphor, a governor for the anaphor, and a SUBJECT.
      As we can see from(1)，the Principle A of Chomsky is overridden by Chinese instances of ziji which are claimed to have typical properties of long一distance   binding,   sub一commanding,    subject-orientation     and non一agreement blocking effect.
      Moreover, English reflexives could also find their antecedents out of the local domain, and even under some circumstances the antecedents could be lacking altogether, as in (2)cited from Konig&Siemund (2000):
(2)a .He claimed that physicists like himself were godsend.
    b .That man concluded that all future discussions of himself would be worthless.
    c .There are groups for people like yourself.
    d .Zap sat down at the desk and opened the drawers.In the top right一hand one was an envelope addressed to himself.
      It is now clear that Chomsky’s Binding Theory is so restrictive in its explanatory power of both Chinese and English reflexives that the cross一linguistic binding issue of reflexives deserve our great further efforts.
1 .2 Research Questions and Our Proposals
      The main concern of the paper is to explore Chinese and English reflexives under the HPSG Binding Theory, generally focusing on the following three aspects:(a) cross一linguistic categorization of reflexives， that is，the syntactic and non一syntactic categories，(b) the role of syntactic reflexives，and (c) the role of non一syntactic reflexives.Especially for intensive reflexives of the non一syntactic category.
