Besides asking the students masterall kinds of English learning techniques, emphasizing the significant role of imparting theEnglish learning strategies to the students is equally important as well.
Chapter One Introduction
1.1Research Background
According to the statistics from internet, less than 60% of the students can pass CET-4in a common college throughout our country in recent years. And there are even less than30% of the students who can pass English subject of Graduate Record Examination. So itis not hard to find out that the English level of non-English majors in our country is nothigh.The choosing of this topic as my research was based on my thoughts, my teachingexperiences and a preliminary reading of the relevant literature.Firstly, I have been an English teacher for non-English majors for more than sevenyears. The common complaint I have heard from my students is that they hate learningwords and they frequently asked me for a short cut to memorize words.Secondly, I have found that many students do spend a lot of time in learningvocabularies, but their efforts seem to be in vain. After talking with some of them, I foundit mainly due to their limited knowledge of how to use different kinds of strategies invocabulary learning, especially the lack of knowledge of metacognitive strategies.

1.2 Research Questions

Besides asking the students masterall kinds of English learning techniques, emphasizing the significant role of imparting theEnglish learning strategies to the students is equally important as well. Learners may havedifferent ways of acquiring vocabulary and learning strategies in the process of wordslearning. Therefore, with the hope to help students to learn vocabulary more effectively,the author made research on improving students’ learning strategies so as to enlargevocabulary to heighten their English level. The research of this thesis was aimed atoffering an accessible way to meet the new need of students in modern society.The following are the research questions of this thesis.
1: Is there a correlation between the use of metacognitive strategies and vocabularylearning in non-English majors?
2: Can the students who make more frequent use of metacognitive learning strategiesachieve a better performance on vocabulary learning than those who make less use of those strategies?

Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 Vocabulary Learning
Vocabulary learning research in the field of Second Language Acquisition is a verywide range. Since the 90’s in the 20thcentury, research for the second language vocabularyknowledge turn from the critical-thinking ability to the term of building a theory ofdevelopment. Both domestic and foreign scholars have done a lot of attempts. Theirresearch ranges from strategies for learning vocabulary classification to its description,from the measurement of the breadth of learning vocabulary to the depth of knowledgeacquisition, even to the output of words and expressions. Scholars abroad: Nation(1990),Wesehe&Paribakht (1996), Meara (1996), Henriksen (1999) and Laufer(1998). Domesticscholars started relatively late, the main researchers are Wang rongpei (2000). ZhangWenzhong, Wu Xudong (2003). Tan xiaochen (2006) Shi guichun(2006)and Wang wenbin(2007) and so on.Different learner may have different ways of learning.
