摘要:本文是英语词汇学众所周知,在中国,英语词汇教学方法是孤立的单词死记硬背。 Usually vocabulary is taught in separation of grammar. Thathas caused a problem: even if a foreign language learner has understood the dictionarymeaning of one word,he still cannot grasp the exact meaning in different context when thatword is used.

Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Significance and Background of the Study
In traditional grammar, grammar and vocabulary have been regarded as two differentcategories in a language. And in these two categoriesChineseEnglish learners learn English.But it is rather difficult to achieve a complete and correct comprehension of a sentence just bystudying its grammar or meaning of every single word. Sinclairpointed out “this is a way ofseeing language text as the result of a very large number of complex choices and the onlystraint is grammaticalness" and “it is often called a ‘slot and filler' model, envisaging texts asa series of slots,which have to be filled from a lexicon, which satisfies local restraints’,. [i9109]However, with a large amount of research in Corpus Linguistics,Sinclair found out that thereare many cases,which can't be explained only by the traditional grammar. For example; “1)There is semantic straints in the use of words or phrases; 2) The meaning of a phrase is notthe simple composition of each word.” Sinclair has also pointed out “the meaning is moreembodied among several collocation words and is not limited to the sequence choice of everysingular word.,Jt is more and more difficult to make a complete and correctexplanation and understanding abouta sentence's meaning only through observing thesentence's grammar structure.

1.2 Purpose of the Study
As we all know,the traditional method of teaching English vocabulary is to teach themeaning of the word separately. Usually vocabulary is taught in separation of grammar. Thathas caused a problem: even if a foreign language learner has understood the dictionarymeaning of one word,he still cannot grasp the exact meaning in different context when thatword is used.From the point of view of Corpus Linguistics, there is a close connection between theunit of meaning and lexical cohesion,which means that the realization of lexical cohesion canbe embodied in lexical items interiorly. And the large amount of linguistic data in thelinguistic corpus makes it possible to study lexical cohesion and lexical co-occurrence bydoing the contrastive research in the use of lexical items.Therefore, this thesis paper is to make a contrastive study between the Native Speakers'Corpus (LFF) and Chinese English Learners' Corpus (CLEC). By studying the relevant coreword ‘ scollocation, colligation, semantic pReference and semantic prosody, this study intendsto find out the respective features of native speakers' and Chinese English learners' lexicalcohesion and aims at analyzinghow the ChineseEnglish learners realize the lexical cohesion inthe unit of meaning. It is hoped that this thesis will cast some doubt on traditional methods ofvocabulary teaching. And it will provide a basis for English teachers to teach English wordsmore efficiently from the aspect of lexical cohesion by using the Sinclair's MaximalApproach in studying the meaning. In such a way of teachingEnglish,Chinese EFL learners'discourse can become more authentic and more coherent.
