Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Background
Writing is regarded as an indispensable and vital part of English skills forcollege students. It is also the ultimate skill for foreign language learners toacquire. Besides, among the four basic skills, writing is the most difficult one forcollege students to master, which needs a lot of integrated and comprehensiveskills. Therefore, nowadays, some linguists and English teachers have paid muchmore attention to English pedagogy in order to improve students’ English writingskills in China.Statistics in CET-4 show that although students’ overall performance in thetest has a tendency of improving, their writing proficiency is far from satisfactory(Qi Yan, 2005). From December, 2011, the examinees of CET-4 are required towrite a composition at least 120 words but no more than 180 words within 30minutes. Before December, 2011, the examinees of CET-4 are required to write anessay at least 120 words but no more than 150 words within 30 minutes. It is clearthat the requirement of CET-4 writing now is stricter than before. Undoubtedly, ithas become a big challenge for Chinese college students to complete such acomposition featured by rich in content, coherent in discourse, and united in themain ideas. Therefore it is high time that great attention should be paid to collegeEnglish writing.

1.2 Purpose and Significance
Before writing this thesis, the author is teaching College English lessons tofreshmen in China University of Geosciences Beijing. During one whole year’steaching practice, the author gradually realized that great emphasis should be puton English writing since the vast majority of students tend to feel difficult andconfused when they are asked to write an essay with at least 120 words and nomore than 180 words within 30 minutes. As a result, they often write with somelanguage errors, which is far from satisfactory. To be specific, errors related tolexis account for a large part. So, some typical questions come to the author’smind. Why do the students get low marks in college English writing? What kindof errors do they often have in writing? How should the teacher facilitate theirwriting proficiency? It is the motivation and also purpose of this thesis.In addition, the nature of writing determines that it is not an easy task tocompose a piece of good writing. Writing skills are rather difficult andcomplicated for students to acquire and also essential to the college students whoaim at improving their English proficiency. At present, there is no specialized writing class for non-English majors. As a result, they have no systematic trainingon the English writing. Another reason why I choose this topic is that littleimportance has been attached to writing in college English teaching practice inChina up to now. There is an absence of an appropriate language teachingapproach in writing. So my thesis aims to study how to improve their writingproficiency effectively and employ the lexical approach to guide their Englishwritings.Furthermore, this study aims at raising non-English majors’ awareness ofusing lexical chunks to reach native-like selection and native-like fluency in theirwriting.
