Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Background of the Present Study
All foreign language learners and teachers have well known that learning secondlanguage involves the learning of a large number of words. When students learn aforeign language, many think that learning vocabulary is fundamental, important, butdifficult. When facing with so many unknown words, students often feel confused orbored. So it is important to help students to master the vocabulary learning strategiesthat are suitable for them so that they can achieve an effective learning outcome.Numerous studies have demonstrated that learning strategies are the importantmeans that need to learn and it is one of the important factors restricting learningeffect. Human thinking activity was conducted with the help of words. No words, nolanguage. It will be difficult for us to perform any kinds of communication if we don’thave enough vocabulary when we learning English. Word is a basic component oflanguage, and it is one of the most active ingredients. Since word is a part ofvocabulary, the vocabulary is also become the active component in its language. It isimportant to solve the problems existing in current school teaching by using strategymethod. It can improve students’ learning and improve the students’ learningefficiency. To a certain extent, it can help them to reduce the learning difficulties andincrease their learning confidence. It also can be more effective to guide teachers’teaching. Teachers reduce the time of teaching and training through purposeful andmeaningful learning strategies to achieve the purpose of reduce the learning load.

1.2 Purpose of the Present Study
This paper aims to find out the non-English major students’ real conditions of theuse of vocabulary learning strategies. It is based on the analysis of the results of thesurvey, a deeper understanding of the current common non-English major collegestudents present situation and problems of learning strategies, make students realizethe importance of language learning strategies, let the students choose the mostappropriate learning strategies to improve their English vocabulary learning.This thesis believes that learning strategy can reduce the language attrition andhave a better effect in vocabulary study. However, what is the reality of non- Englishmajor students using learning strategy? To achieve this goal, the author intends toconduct an investigation of it, employing the research methods of questionnaires andinterview. The investigation of this study by questionnaire and interview can reflectthe true condition of the use of vocabulary learning strategies which can give valuableteaching implications for the future improvements. Changes of the quality and cultureof the students may lead to a change of use of vocabulary learning strategies. So theinvestigation which advances with time is pretty useful for the directions of futureEnglish vocabulary learning.
