Throughout the world governmentsare engaged in systematic efforts to
boost enterprise. In the UK there isclear evidence of a sea change in
attitudes towards enterprise andentrepreneurs; entrepreneurial role
models are celebrated, aspiringentrepreneurs are given theopportunity to raise money on TV andleague tables ranking a whole rangeof entrepreneurial businesses arepublished regularly. But what makes
entrepreneurs tick? This question has been the centre ofmuch entrepreneurial research formany years; yet the limitation of much
of this work has been its rathernarrow focus on the personality
attributes believed to characteriseentrepreneurs and the associated
difficulty of distinguishing betweenthose characteristics that are the
hallmark of entrepreneurs from thoseassociated with successful senior
executives. A particular value of WhatMakes a Great Entrepreneur is its
focus on competencies, rather thanpersonality traits, and the use of thesedefining competencies as a basis fordistinguishing between entrepreneursand successful executives. The wealthof interview data sheds rich light onthe question of what makesentrepreneurs tick and what sets themapart? The report brings to life thereality of Entrepreneurship.
Perhaps common to all entrepreneursis the desire to change things. This
desire may not always be
‘reasonable’ but it may be the very
unreasonableness of entrepreneurs
that is the motor of change. Perhaps
George Bernard Shaw perfectly
encapsulated the essence of
entrepreneurship.“The reasonable man adapts himselfto the world. The unreasonable manpersists in trying to adapt the world tohimself. Therefore all progressdepends on the unreasonable man.”
